Tunnel Beach

Hidden Gem: Tunnel Beach Oasis Along the Clearwater River

Tunnel Beach is a relatively small but excellent spot in a fairly calm section of the Clearwater River. It lies between Kamiah and the Greer bridge, about 5 miles from Kamiah, and is not on Google Maps.

There is no roadside outhouse, so get changed and use the restroom before you head out.

Parking will fit about six average sized cars. The trail is rocky and steep, descending about 45ft down to the sand. Take great care in navigating the path, especially with children.

A Local Hotspot

This beach is a bit of a hotspot, so you’ll need to get there pretty early on weekends and holidays to secure a spot. Large groups may have difficulty if they need to come in a greater number of cars, or if anyone else is already at the beach; it’s best to have a backup plan if you aren’t sure you’ll have the space you require.

This beach usually shows anywhere from 25 to 35 ft of sand. There’s also a shoreline of river rock upriver past that for at least another solid 50 feet.

The kid-friendly shallow area extends 5-7 ft. from the edge of the water, all around the curve of the beach, providing 20 to 25 ft² of shallow water to play in.

A Few More Things

Across the river is a large grouping of boulders. One of them is shaped so that it holds a warmer shallow pool of water when the river is low. Several others, teens, and adults enjoy jumping off into the river. There is also a tunnel the railroad tracks run through, which is where Tunnel Beach gets its name.

The current is typically a bit slower in this area, but should still be regarded with caution. We recommend keeping your swimming trips to the hottest months of the season, normally July and August, for safety.

As always, pack in what you pack out, and do your best to tidy up before leaving to help this beautiful area stay enjoyable for everyone. Swim, explore, and more at Tunnel Beach!
